Dream Big Dreams
This week as I reflect upon the study material for my entrepreneurship class, I keep coming back to the ideas set forth in chapter four of A Field Guide for the Hero's Journey by Jeff Sandefer and Reverend Robert Sirico. This chapter is all about the companions that we travel with on our journey. In every epic adventure, the hero never goes through the entire journey alone. There are always trusty sidekicks, helpful people who coincidentally happen to be in the right place at the right time to help, and usually wise sages to offer advice. The same is true for our lives and the adventures that we embark on. Man was not meant to be alone. We are sent to earth in families with numerous individuals who impact our lives for good or ill along the way. The people we choose to surround ourself with really do make an enormous impact on what we will or will not be able to achieve. While we may not be able to choose the members of the family we are born into, or who are born to us, we do get to choose which other people we invite to accompany us on our journey. Those choices are some of the most critical ones that we can make. If we surround ourselves with people who share our values and are optimistic about our abilities, we will be much more successful than if we yoke ourselves to the wrong people. We should look for people who will be loyal, moral, hopeful, and smart. And in return, we need to embody those same attributes for others. We all need help and when working towards achieving our big dreams, help is critical.
For my big dream, I know I will need lots of help from others. In fact the very premise of my big dream hinges on creating networks of amazing, competent people to educate others in the areas that I may be weak in. I want to create a genealogical retreat center where people book a stay for three to five days and have a custom built program based around areas of genealogical skills that they want to learn or help that they want to receive with specific problems. It would be impossible for me to be an expert in every area that a person may want to build a program around so I will need a network of phenomenal people who I can hire to come and give lectures or workshops to my customers. I will need to create my network from talented, hardworking individuals who are ethical. I will also need help with the hospitality portion of my dream. This is a big dream. It will take a lot of people to see it come to fruition and I'm not anywhere close to pulling it off yet. However, I know that God will help me make the connections with the people who I need to meet in order to make this dream happen. He is, as always, the first and foremost companion I need to have with me at all times as I work towards this dream and every other dream I may have. He is the ultimate travelling companion along my journey.
